David Fannin

Dave is a 1968 graduate of Wheelersburg High School. Dave began a life of service to others when he joined the Porter Township Volunteer Fire Department at the age of 18. He served as a volunteer fireman with the Porter Township Fire Department for 44 years. During this time he served two terms as fire chief and 15 years as Fire Prevention Officer. He was instrumental in developing the Fire Safety Program and implemented the program into Wheelersburg Local Schools. Dave would teach fire safety to the elementary and middle school students at Wheelersburg during Fire Prevention Week each year. In 1979 he received the Outstanding Community Service: Above and Beyond the Call of Duty award. He was a founding member of the Porter Township Rescue Squad. He served 25 years with the squad. 
 
After leaving the Porter Township Fire Department, he served as a firefighter with the Green Township Volunteer Fire Department for 6 years. In 2018 he received recognition from the State Fire Marshall’s Office for serving as a volunteer firefighter with 50 years of service. Dave also served as a special deputy with the Scioto County Sheriff’s Department. 
 
Dave’s professional career includes Safety, Security and Emergency Response Specialist, Supervisor, Process Safety Management & Industrial Hygiene and Chemical Operator at Sunoco Chemicals. He has also served as Disaster Safety Officer for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Fire Safety Educator for the Ohio State Fire Marshall Office, Emergency  Management Specialist at USEC, and Industrial Safety & Industrial Hygiene Specialist at Wastren Advantage.

After retiring from the workforce in 2012, he began researching family genealogy. He knew that his great grandfather had been a member of the Independent Fire Company No. 1 in Portsmouth. Through further research he discovered that his great great grandfather had been a member of the Portsmouth Volunteer Fire Company. His research led him to write and publish a book in 2018 titled “History of the Early Portsmouth Ohio Fire Companies.”
 
Dave is married to Amber, a former middle school principal and teacher at Wheelersburg. They are the parents of Wendi Perry and Kyle Fannin. Kyle is following in his father’s footsteps. He works as a Firefighter/EMT in Washington DC. Dave and Amber have two
grandchildren; Raelen Perry, who will begin her senior year at Wheelersburg in a few weeks, and Ryker Fannin, 3 years old.
