The Wheelersburg Schools Alumni and Friends Foundation (WSAFF) is pleased to announce the awarding of grants to Wheelersburg Middle School teacher Heather Mullins and Wheelersburg High School Teacher Emily Harner. The WSAFF was created to support the students and staff by promoting, enhancing, and supplementing the educational programs of the Wheelersburg Schools. Mullin’s and Harner’s grant submissions were deemed excellent examples of the types of creative ideas WSAFF seeks to support.
The WSAFF Grant program kicked off the 2022-2023 school year application period in November. All staff members were encouraged to submit a grant application by November 30. The WSAFF Advisory Committee met in mid-December and reviewed the grant requests. Mullins and Harner were notified of their grant awards in January.
Heather Mullins, Wheelersburg Middle School Technology Teacher, was awarded a grant of $3,000 for her submission entitled “WMS Tech Fair: Digital Art and 3D Printing Expansion”. She plans to use the funds to support the WMS Tech Fair through awarding tee-shirts, cash prizes, and technology prizes. Additionally, Mullins stated, “This grant would expand access to the Tech Fair, 3D printing and digital art resources and motivate students to become more engaged in these areas. The items included in this grant will be used by the Tech Team and other after-school programs as well as throughout the school day by middle school tech and art classes.”
For her grant submission entitled “Feel the Music”, Emily Harner, Wheelersburg High School Music Teacher, was awarded a $2,000 grant. She plans to provide her music students with up-to-date programs, methods and means for learning music through a new CleverTouch Interactive Display panel. Harner stated, “As technology changes, our classrooms and styles of teaching often must change with it. Our students now have their own Chromebook. The utilization of these devices has opened doors of possibilities for music education as we now have access to notation software, performance video archives, and recording/editing tools at our fingertips. Now that our students have the technology, teachers must be equally equipped as well. Integration of the new technology allows teachers to further connect with students, provide new opportunities for collaboration, and open doors of opportunity for creativity and imagination.”
The WSAFF is happy to support these creative ideas that will enhance student’s learning and motivate them to achieve. If you would like to support the WSAFF in their mission, please consider donating to the WSAFF Endowment Fund. The endowment fund is being built to support our students and staff for many future generations by only utilizing the earnings and protecting the fund’s principal.
