English Department
The English Department offers two courses of study: General and College Preparatory, along with AP Language and Composition and AP Literature and Composition for upperclassmen. Speech and Debate and Shakespearean Studies are also offered as part of the curriculum. Four units of English are required for graduation.

The emphasis of the College Preparatory (and AP*) program is on:
an intensive review of grammar
vocabulary and word parts
narrative, persuasive, and analytical writing
critical reading
critical thinking
research-based essays
in-class and prepared essays
short stories, poetry, drama
composition
American and world literature
literary criticism
ancient, recent, and contemporary authors
literary terminology (including the elements of style)
rhetorical strategies
speaking and listening skills

The General area of study emphasizes:
basic elements of grammar
letter writing
vocabulary and word parts
critical thinking
critical reading
elements of style
creative writing (including but not limited to narratives, poetry, drama)
grammar terminology, structure, usage, and related mechanics
American authors
World literature
narrative, persuasive, and analytical writing
expository papers
in-class and prepared essays
research skills and research-based writing
speaking and listening skills
